Weezer – “Pacific Daydream” Album Review

Weezer – “Pacific Daydream” (Crush Music Atlantic)”
By: Cait McMahon

In their 11th year of pure, stubborn success, Weezer deserves a more specific genre than alternative rock since producing hits “Buddy Holly”, “Say It Ain’t So . While the California quartet sound tracked after-school activities throughout the 90’s, pop-influenced beats creep their way into the few latest albums, completed by synth echoes present throughout Pacific Daydream.

This particular records delivers a more surf-rock summer mood with music videos for “Mexican Fender” and “Beach Boys”, but presents an incredibly solid chorus line in each track on Pacific Daydream. Weezer’s vocalist Richard Coumo remains unwavering in his constant development of new genres for the band to melt into, to create the scene of “hanging out on a summer night”. Listening from start to finish, each songs ends up incorporating a bouncy chorus found in the single “Feels Like Summer”, which became their biggest hit on Alternative Radio in a decade and even made an appearance on The Weather Channel. Fans can find one of the band’s largest influences, the Beach Boys, busting in all ten bops like the embodiment of a work week “Weekend Woman”. The record wraps up with one of the more upbeat songs on the track list, “Any Friend Of Diane’s” after islander anthem “La Mancha Screwjob” and secures itself as one of the more substantial releases of 2017.

Branching around from emo/rock to alternative, Weezer reached classic status long ago, and with single “Say It Ain’t So” sitting at a shattering 61 million video views, headlining major festivals and frequently performing alongside rock massives like Panic! At The Disco and currently in 2018, The Foo Fighters and The Pixies. Sitting atop the roof of the alternative rock house, Weezer almost effortlessly remains a fan favorite, playing a nostalgic role for fans of all ages.
