TOOL’s Maynard James Keenan: “Nobody Owes You As An Artist Any Accolades”

Tool & A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan recently with Revolver for an extended discussion titled The Art Of Work. Keenan talks about his love of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the martial arts academy he opened near his home, how important intuition is when it comes to being an artist or a businessman, and how essentially you owe nobody anything and they also owe you nothing.

“So be happy with what your decisions are. You’re on your own, you don’t owe anybody anything. But if you’re doing your job and you’re doing it accurately enough and you’re expressing from the heart, from the core, from your experiences and your intuition; Other people are going to resonate with that, it’s gonna resonate with them, they’re going to get something out of it. Their day might go better because of what your true honest approach to what you’re doing, you’re gonna help other people, you’re gonna help yourself, you’re gonna help your family.

“But just understand that at the end of the day nobody owes you as an artist any accolades. You don’t owe them anything, they don’t owe you anything, you’re just doing.”
