The Plague – “Hope for the F.U.T.U.R.E.” Album Review

The Plague – “Hope for the F.U.T.U.R.E.” (Recover Records)
By: Brian Campbell

On their debut album “Hope For The F.U.T.U.R.E.”, Rochester’s The Plague instill hope right out of the gates on “Not The Only One,” a track with hope literally woven into every bar (‘When you feel alone / You’re not the only one / When you’re losing hope / You’re not the only one / When you feel like giving up / you’re not the only one’), before electronic touches and swaths of synth pepper “Danger,” a banger brimming with discernible bounce and swagger.

From there, the band pairs intense guitar works with massive hooks on “Make Me Over,” deliver a straight up ballad on “Will You Ever Know Me” and transform into All Time Low on alt-pop love song “Can’t Stop Loving You” before morphing into The Relapse Symphony on true blue standout track “Fire Roar.”

The Plague keeps the gas pedal partially pushed down on the subsequent “Antidote,” which may house the albums best guitar-led bridge and press that pedal to the floor on the vengeful “Living Failure,” which sees frontman David Adam Monroe spit numerous venomous barbs like ‘living failure, you’ll never be perfect, fraud and faker, you’ll never be perfect’ and ‘you’re full of shit you faker’ over and over again as churning riffs and hammering percussion rain down around him. The penultimate “Bleeding in the Snow” finds The Plague going all post-hardcore, emulating something akin to Saosin, before wrapping up “Hope for the F.U.T.U.R.E.” with spacey and atmospheric slow churner “Not God.”

The album definitely picks up steam as it rolls on, seemingly getting better and better with each passing track. It’s a better record when the band lays on the heavy. Fans of Piece the Veil, The Relapse Symphony and Get Scared should love “Hope for the F.U.T.U.R.E.”
