Interview with PRIMITIVE RACE

Sound OFF! It is your turn to tell the world!

Band: PRIMITIVE RACE
New Album: SOUL PRETENDER

Sound Off:
The greatest challenge to date your band has met and conquered was?
Primitive Race:
I don’t think we’ve conquered it but Chuck’s passing 6 days after our album Soul Pretender was released has been a huge setback. When you lose your singer and a dear friend at the same time it really changes perspective.

Sound Off:
Prior to an evening’s performance do the band members have a ritual or exercise or something unique they do before hitting the stage?
Primitive Race:
Chuck and I would generally do a shot of whiskey before he went on while he was out on his Reintroduce Yourself Tour. Sadly, we never had the chance to take Primitive Race live.

Sound Off:
The biggest thrill when playing on stage is?
Primitive Race:
The adrenaline rush when the lights come up and you look out across a packed audience and they’re just going nuts. It’s a unique experience where they’re giving the band energy and we’re dishing it right back.

Sound Off:
Does the band have an opening song by another band they like to have played just prior to going on stage?
Primitive Race:
If so, what song is it? Warlock Pinchers – Morrissey Rides A Cockhorse

Sound Off:
What is the bands favorite fast food eatery when on the road?
Primitive Race:
I try to stay away from that junk. What I prefer is if I’m in a city that is famous for something I want to try that. Like St. Louis has toasted ravioli, Imo’s Pizza, and Ted Drewes frozen custard. South Florida has great Cuban food like Don Ramon’s. New Orleans you can get any Cajun food you want! Kansas City is BBQ.

Sound Off:
When you want to buy music how do each of you buy it? Download, CD, Vinyl or ?
Primitive Race:
I buy music every week! These days Amazon tends to be the go to. Buy the CD get the autorip digital. If it’s a record I’m extremely excited for I’ll buy multiple formats. Like for the new Gruntruck record I bought digital, CD, and Vinyl. Gary Numan was CD, Vinyl, Cassette and digital.

Sound Off:
When performing in a several band line-up do you have a particular place in the line-up of 1,2,3, last that you as a band like to perform?
Primitive Race:
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to work those things out. I think it will be one of the things that I question and wonder what could have been.

Sound Off:
If you each could say a few positive words about each other in the band- what words would you choose to describe one another?
Primitive Race:
Chuck was an amazing person. Fun, charismatic, charming, and had a style that was all his own. Mark Thwaite the guy has played with everyone from Al Jourgensen, Peter Murphy, Gary Numan…to Roger Daltry. He’s an incredible player and his hair is much cooler than mine. Erie Loch is a true friend and he’s extremely patient with all my Wiley Coyote ideas. Dale is Dale he’s a beast behind the kit. He makes it thunder and how easy it comes to him is a testament of just what a fantastic player he is. I love all those guys and feel so fortunate we had the chance to make this record.
