Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts & Cheap Trick at Ak-Chin Pavilion

The lines were long to get into Ak-Chin Pavilion on August 21st, 2016 and the crowds gathered to see Joan Jett & the Blackhearts with Cheap Trick and Heart in The Rock Hall Three For All. This tour certainly has taken many people back to the 70’s when all these bands were created.

Cheap Trick took stage first and started with “Hello There” that was first released in 1977. Forty three years later and these guys are still on stage rocking out like they did in the beginning. Cheap Trick an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois had the crowd going with hits that included “Baby Loves to Rock” “I Want You to Want Me” and “Dream Police”.  Robin Zander, their lead singer, dropped to his knees during “Dream Police” and had a backstage crew member cover him in a fancy all sparkle jacket that shined as bright as the stage lights. Rick Nielsen, the lead guitarist, brought out his one of kind customized Hamer five neck guitar that was produced from his idea back in the 80’s. For those guitar enthusiasts Rick’s custom 1981 Hamer includes a 12 string, a 6 string, a 6 string with a whammy, another 6 string, and a fretless 6 string. At one point in time during the show they brought out a five bucket full of guitar picks and dumps it into the crowd.  Ending their set with “Goodbye” Cheap Trick put on a heck of a show.

Joan Jett & the Black hearts took the stage shortly after and believe me she had everyone out of their seats for most of her set. Dazzling the crowd with her amazing performance she began her set with her 1980 hit “Bad Reputation”. She played both her old songs and even included songs from their latest album Unvarnished. “T.M.I” which is her output towards modern musicians that seem to post about their private life all over social media gained quite a reaction from the crowd, and a good one at that. She went on with a song that reflects her on a more personal level, “Make It Back” she explains was from her personal experience with Hurricane Sandy in her town of Long Beach. With flooding, hurricanes, tornados and mother nature disasters all over the world “Make It Back” give details to the struggle one goes through but pushes through together with those around them.

Heart was last to take the stage. To date, Heart has sold over 35 million records worldwide, including over 22.5 million in album sales in the U.S. During their performance they included their hits “What About Love” “Beautiful Broken” “Barracuda” and even encored with two Led Zeppelin’s covers “Immigrant Song” and “Stairway to Heaven”.  Ann and Nancy Wilson, the core of the rock band, put on an amazing performance. These sisters are still rocking the stage like it was their first performance in the early 70’s.
