In This Moment with The Word Alive and DED at The Van Buren

April 16, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm

Born of a chance meeting and the innate musical rapport established between vocalist Maria Brink and lead guitarist Chris HoworthIn This Moment quickly grew from local cult favorites performing in Los Angeles clubs to a MySpace phenomenon before landing a deal with Century Media. Along the way, the group was fleshed out by rhythm guitarist Blake Bunzel, bassist Jesse Landry, and drummer Jeff Fabb; embarked on several U.S. tours with the likes of Diecast and 36 Crazyfists; and gradually honed its melodic metalcore songwriting for the recording of the 2007 debut album Beautiful Tragedy, which was supported via the band’s inclusion in the Hot Chicks of Metal Tour, featuring Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation, among others. Debuting at the number 37 slot on the Billboard Top 200, The Dream arrived in 2008, followed by A Star-Crossed Wasteland in 2010 and the electro-charged Blood in 2012. The group’s fifth studio long-player, 2014’s Atlantic-issued Black Widow, marked In This Moment‘s major-label debut. In June 2017, the band dropped the single “Roots” in anticipation of the release of its sixth full-length, Ritual, which arrived the following month.

In This Moment At Ak-Chin Pavilion – July 2016

A hard-hitting American nu-metal troupe based out of Tempe, Arizona, Ded was formed in 2016 out of the ashes of Southwest rockers the Cover-Up and Man Made Machine. Coming together shortly after the final Man Made Machineperformance, the band featured the talents of vocalist Joe Cotela and percussionist Matthew Reinhard, alongside ex-Greeley Estates members David Ludlow (guitar) and Kyle Koelsch (bass). In December 2016, the newly minted quartet issued the single “FMFY,” with a second single, “Anti-Everything,” arriving later that May. Mis-An-Thrope, the band’s debut long-player, was released two months later via Suretone Records.

Ded At Fear Farm – Oct 2017

Formed in 2008, the Word Alive are a metalcore band based out of Phoenix, Arizona. Originally founded by singer Craig Mabbitt and guitarists Zack Hansen and Tony Pizzuti, the band served as a side project for Mabbitt, who joined Escape the Fate around the same time. Filling out their membership with bassist Nick Urlacher, drummer Tony Aguilera, and keyboardist Dusty Riach, the band began to develop a sound, though their progress was stunted by Mabbitt‘s rigorous touring schedule, causing the band to bring in vocalist Tyler Smith to replace him. With Smith in place, things began to move quickly for the Word Alive, who signed on with Fearless Records, which would release their Empire EP in 2009. After hitting the road, the Word Alive released their full-length debut, Deceiver, in 2010, a year that would also see them parting ways with Aguileraand Urlacher, who were replaced by bassist Daniel Shapiro and drummer Justin Salinas (though his time with the band would be short-lived, with drummer Luke Holland stepping in to replace him just two years later when Salinas grew tired of life on the road). A second album, the darker and heavier Life Cycles, followed in 2012. The Word Alive continued to mature their sound, returning in 2014 with Real, an album that found the band developing a more nuanced and atmospheric take on the genre. 2015 saw the band continuing a grueling tour schedule that included international appearances in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and the Phillipines. In November of that year, their dedication to fans was tested when vocalist Smith broke his back and several ribs during a stage-diving incident and still insisted on honoring every remaining date on the tour. Just a few months later, the Word Alive announced the release of their fourth LP. Dark Matter arrived in March 2016.
